Irish Traditional Music in the New River Valley, Virginia

We created these pages to share some of the tunes played at Irish sessions in and around the New River Valley, Virginia. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains a bit south and west of Roanoke,  the area encompasses the communities of Blacksburg, Radford, Christiansburg, Floyd and others along the New River as it turns toward West Virginia. You can find more information on the area here.

Although best known as a hotbed of old time and bluegrass music, there are a number of people devoted to playing the traditional music of the Scots-Irish emigrants who settled the New River Valley, and we get together regularly to play tunes and have a good time.

There are currently two regular, "open" sessions in the area:

Oddfellas Cantina in Floyd, on the first Friday of each month, 6-9 p.m. We celebrated the 12th anniversary of our session at Oddfellas back in February.

The Cellar, in Blacksburg, on the third Thursday of each month, 9:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. This session is coming up on its 7th birthday.

Come out and have some tunes with us!
